Section titled “Overview”The HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee (HGNC) maintains the authoritative names and symbols for human genes.
This namespace contains HGNC’s current approved symbol reports, withdrawn and merged/split symbol reports, and gene-family database tables.
genes resolves approved, alias, and previous human gene symbols. hgnc_id is stable even when a symbol changes. ncbi_gene_id and ensembl_gene_id link HGNC records to corresponding human gene records.
Fields with multiple HGNC values are available as lists.

symbol is HGNC’s approved symbol. alias_symbols and previous_symbols resolve historical or alternate symbols; hgnc_id identifies the matched report. withdrawn covers symbols that HGNC has withdrawn or merged/split into other reports.
hgnc.resources— External resources linked by HGNC to one or more gene families.hgnc.withdrawn— HGNC symbol reports that are no longer approved, including symbols merged or split into replacement reports.
